No, you do not get to chose what to call me

I'm taking a class with one of the professors I had during my first year of law school. This particular professor is sort of the living, breathing representation of everything I hate about law school. He reeks privilege. He's the only professor I've had who implements a very traditional and very adversarial Socratic method. He refers to every hypothetical attorney and judge as "he." The class I'm currently taking is required.

Today he called on a student named "Jung-min." Now, he requires all of us to put name tags on our desks (he can't be bothered to learn 25 names...or make a syllabus...did I mention the class is required). He looked at the name tag and said, "How do you say that? June Mine? Jung Mine? That's your first name? Both words?" The student nodded. "Can I just call you Jung?" Um... no.

No, you may not take a name that is unfamiliar to you and cut it in half. Do I call you Prof. Sm when your name is Smith? Obviously not.

Interestingly, Jung-min just nodded along and allowed the professor to referred to him by a mispronounced and shortened name.

  1. I hate professors like that! I also hate overly political correct professors too. Can't they just be friendly and considerate- is that too much to ask of a law prof? ha ha- love the photo for effect :)
